Civil engineering is a diverse field covering multiple specialties including structural engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical studies, and transportation systems. By strategically choosing courses, you can customize UIC's MS in Civil Engineering program to align with your career goals and academic interests.

The coursework-only track is designed for professionals seeking advanced knowledge or pursuing licensure in civil engineering. This flexible option accommodates both part-time and full-time students.

To complete the 36-credit requirement, MS coursework-only students must include at least 12 credits from 500-level courses. Within these, 8 credits must be from CME-designated courses (excluding CME 596), while 4 credits can be from either CME or COE courses (also excluding CME 596 or equivalent).

The remaining 24 credits must be earned through 400-level or 500-level CME or COE courses. Note that only one CME 596 (or equivalent) course counts toward graduation, while CME 496 (or equivalent) doesn't qualify. Additionally, 400-level ENGR courses aren't accepted. Courses outside the College of Engineering require pre-approval from your academic advisor.

Total required credits: 36 (D grades don't fulfill credit requirements).
