The Master of Education (MEd) in Science Education provides advanced training for science educators working in diverse settings, including schools, communities, and various professional environments. Students can choose between two pathways: Strand A leads to an Illinois Professional Educators License (PEL) with secondary or middle school science certification, while Strand B focuses on informal science education settings or advanced research opportunities for seasoned educators. This graduate program reflects the UIC College of Education's commitment to educational equity, preparing science teachers to promote social justice through transformative pedagogy. Our program cultivates educators who champion inclusive science learning that empowers all students. Core principles of active participation, optimism, and equity guide our approach to science education both inside and outside traditional classroom settings.
Students pursuing the licensure track (Strand A) can finish the MEd in Science Education in just 12 months with a Summer start date. Both program options also allow for a two-year completion timeline, with evening classes available for most coursework.
In addition to the Graduate College minimum requirements, applicants must meet the following program requirements: Baccalaureate Field No restrictions. Grade Point Average: Strand A—Licensure option: Requires a 3.00/4.00 for the final 60 semester (90 quarter) hours of undergraduate study, a 3.00 for any postbaccalaureate/graduate course work, except for a 2.50/4.00 in a science field. Strand B—No licensure option: Requires a 3.00/4.00 for the final 60 semester hours (90 quarter) hours of undergraduate study and for all postbaccalaureate/graduate course work.
Minimum English Competency Test Score: TOEFL 80, with sub scores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Speaking 20, and Writing 21 (iBT Test); 60, with sub scores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Writing 21 (revised Paper-Delivered Test), OR, IELTS 6.5, with sub scores of 6.0 for all four sub scores, OR, PTE-Academic 54, with sub scores of Reading 51, Listening 47, Speaking 53, and Writing 56.
