The groundwork for continuous learning is established in a child's earliest years, with 90% of brain development happening before Kindergarten. Educators in early childhood play a critical role in fostering developmental growth and shaping children's academic, social, economic, and health outcomes.
UIC's master's degree in Early Childhood Education incorporates cutting-edge research on how culture and environment influence learning, while addressing the specific requirements of Chicago-area communities. As Illinois' pioneering program to train educators for all children regardless of abilities, it remains among the limited options providing combined coursework in both early childhood and special education.
This program prepares specialists committed to serving young learners and families in diverse environments. Participants can obtain an Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with qualifications in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, the Gateways Level 5 credential, and/or Early Intervention certification during their studies.
In addition to the Graduate College minimum requirements, applicants must meet the following program requirements: Baccalaureate Field No restrictions. Grade Point Average Recommended minimum of 2.75/4.00 for the final 60 semester (90 quarter) hours of undergraduate study and at least 3.00/4.00 for all postbaccalaureate/graduate course work.
Minimum English Competency Test Score: TOEFL 80, with sub scores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Speaking 20, and Writing 21 (iBT Test); 60, with sub scores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Writing 21 (revised Paper-Delivered Test), OR, IELTS 6.5, with sub scores of 6.0 for all four sub scores, OR, PTE-Academic 54, with sub scores of Reading 51, Listening 47, Speaking 53, and Writing 56.
