This program provides an interdisciplinary lens for examining Latin American communities and historical minority groups, as well as US residents of Latin American heritage. It fosters methodologies spanning social sciences, humanities, literary and artistic studies, cultural analysis, and historical research. The master's curriculum equips students to critically analyze pressing social concerns affecting Latin American and Latino communities, including globalization, colonial legacies, postcolonial dynamics, transnational connections, migration patterns, economic progress, equity issues, and identity-related topics encompassing ethnicity, cultural heritage, citizenship, and gender.
The graduate program features distinctive research-oriented coursework, culminating in a community-based organizational placement where students undertake fieldwork. The primary objective is to equip graduates with specialized competencies that enhance their professional prospects across both academic and applied career trajectories.
In addition to the Graduate College minimum requirements, applicants must meet the following requirements: Baccalaureate Field No restrictions. Grade Point Average At least 3.00/4.00 for the final 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study.
Minimum English Competency Test Score: TOEFL 80, with sub scores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Speaking 20, and Writing 21 (iBT Test); 60, with sub scores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Writing 21 (revised Paper-Delivered Test), OR, IELTS 6.5, with sub scores of 6.0 for all four sub scores, OR, PTE-Academic 54, with sub scores of Reading 51, Listening 47, Speaking 53, and Writing 56.
