Data science - the discipline of structuring, analyzing, and extracting meaningful patterns from vast datasets - requires diverse expertise. Data scientists possess strong computational skills. They're equally proficient in statistical methods. They grasp how their analyses impact various sectors, from private enterprises to public institutions. Moreover, they can effectively translate their complex findings for diverse audiences, demonstrating exceptional communication abilities.
To ensure UIC data science students master all these competencies, we collaborated with three UIC colleges for foundational coursework: the College of Engineering (housing computer science), the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (encompassing mathematics, statistics, and communication studies), and the College of Business Administration. Additionally, the College of Applied Health Sciences and the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs contribute to our specialized data science tracks.
The nine available concentrations for data science majors draw courses from five UIC colleges: engineering, liberal arts and sciences, business, applied health sciences, and urban planning. Some concentrations focus entirely on one college's offerings, while others combine courses from multiple academic units.
