Data science - the discipline of structuring, analyzing, and extracting meaningful patterns from vast datasets - requires diverse expertise. Data scientists possess strong computational skills. They're equally proficient in statistical methods. They grasp how their analyses impact various sectors, from private enterprises to public institutions. Moreover, they can effectively translate their complex findings for diverse audiences, demonstrating exceptional communication abilities.
To ensure every UIC data science student masters these competencies, we've integrated resources from three UIC colleges for core curriculum: the College of Engineering (housing computer science), the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (containing mathematics, statistics, and communication programs), and the College of Business. Additionally, the College of Applied Health Sciences and the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs contribute to our specialized data science tracks.
The nine available specializations for data science majors draw coursework from five UIC colleges: engineering, liberal arts and sciences, business, applied health sciences, and urban planning and public affairs. Some specializations focus entirely on one college's offerings, while others combine courses from multiple academic units.
