Data science - the skill to structure, analyze, and extract meaningful patterns from vast datasets - requires diverse competencies. Data science professionals receive training in computer science. They also possess advanced statistical knowledge. They grasp how their analyses impact various sectors, from private enterprises to public institutions. Additionally, they can translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences, demonstrating strong communication abilities.
To ensure every UIC data science graduate masters these essential capabilities, we collaborated with three UIC colleges for foundational coursework: the College of Engineering (housing computer science), the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (containing mathematics, statistics, and communication departments), and the College of Business. Two additional colleges - Applied Health Sciences and Urban Planning and Public Affairs - contribute to our focused data science specializations.
The nine specialization tracks available to data science students incorporate courses from five UIC colleges: engineering, liberal arts and sciences, business, applied health sciences, and urban planning and public affairs. Some specializations draw entirely from one college's curriculum, while others combine courses from multiple academic units.
