UIC offers a four-year program where students select a History major and Education minor to fulfill all state certification requirements for secondary education. Specialization options include U.S. History, European History, and World (non-Western) History. For almost 40 years, UIC's Teaching of History program has trained future high school history educators, with over 1,000 graduates since its inception in 1966. Numerous alumni now teach throughout Chicago and neighboring areas, demonstrating UIC's enduring commitment to urban education and broader regional impact.
The program emphasizes rigorous historical training, responding to contemporary demands for discipline-focused teacher preparation. Both BAT and MAT candidates concentrate on mastering historical knowledge and research methods. History department courses explore the theory and policy behind history education, along with practical teaching strategies. Paired with College of Education coursework, this comprehensive approach equips graduates to effectively share their historical passion across diverse middle and high school settings.
First-year applicants are currently enrolled in high school or have not attended college since graduation.
