UIC history majors benefit from an intimate learning environment within a major urban research university. With rare exceptions, our undergraduate classes are exclusively taught by UIC professors. While introductory courses may be larger, they typically incorporate weekly small-group discussions facilitated by teaching assistants. Upper-level courses for majors often have just 10-12 students.
Students enjoy the flexibility to pursue diverse academic interests while maintaining a strong foundation in core historical studies. Working closely with the Director of Undergraduate Studies, majors design personalized concentrations focused on specific regions, time periods, or themes. The program requires 33 credit hours in history, spanning introductory and advanced courses. Two key courses - History 300 and Hist 440 (beginning Fall 2014) - focus on developing students' historical research and writing skills (see full requirements in the UIC Undergraduate Catalogue and four-year plan). We also provide a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching (BAT) program for aspiring secondary school history educators.
First-year applicants are currently enrolled in high school or have not attended college since graduation.
