The Gender and Women's Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago is a dynamic interdisciplinary hub where scholars explore diverse subjects essential to comprehending the significance of gender and sexuality in society. From documenting the contributions of Mexican-origin women in Chicago through oral histories to examining how Arab American diasporas shape lives across Beirut, Detroit, and San Francisco, or analyzing LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) activists' role in reshaping justice and liberation discussions, we are a dedicated collective of scholars, students, and staff deeply invested in Chicago as an international metropolis.
We actively share our research with the communities we engage with, demonstrating our commitment as a socially involved academic department. Our team has contributed as consultants for documentaries, curated museum displays, served as expert witnesses in cases involving sexual violence and women's immigration, and developed innovative community initiatives. These endeavors, combined with our strong publication record in both scholarly and mainstream platforms, extend our influence beyond campus and foster dialogue with other organizations tackling similar issues.
First-year applicants are currently enrolled in high school or have not attended college since graduation.
