The Lionel Hampton School of Music, nationally accredited, offers this major for aspiring professional performers, composers, and educators. This comprehensive liberal arts program also equips students for diverse careers in fields like business, law, and medicine. Music majors develop their craft through performance, composition, analysis, and active listening. Rigorous training hones musical abilities while coursework in theory, history, and performance establishes a robust foundation in humanities and social sciences. Admission requires an audition.
This degree challenges students to achieve excellence in musical performance across various instruments - including keyboard, brass, percussion, woodwinds, strings (classical guitar included) - or vocal performance. Prospective students must audition with their primary instrument or voice. The curriculum mandates solo recitals: a 30-minute performance during junior year and a 60-minute recital in the senior year. Most program graduates continue their education at the master's level, either at the University of Idaho or other institutions.
