The PhD is an advanced research degree where the core requirement involves composing an original thesis (also known as a doctoral dissertation). This scholarly work is developed through research guided by a faculty advisor and evaluated by a panel consisting of three departmental faculty members and an external specialist.
Before beginning their thesis, Mathematics PhD candidates must first fulfill the department's Candidacy Requirements. Subsequently, they select a faculty advisor from the Mathematics Department who will oversee their research and later lead the thesis defense committee.
While formal doctoral research commences only after meeting candidacy criteria, we strongly encourage PhD students to explore potential research collaborations with faculty early in their program. New students should also plan a strategic course sequence to master foundational knowledge relevant to their intended mathematical specialization.
