With a foundation in outstanding creative writing skills and demonstrated excellence in either MA studies covering English and American literature or MFA training in creative writing and literature, PhD candidates in literature and creative writing should strive to enhance their sophistication as writer-scholars. They must further develop expertise in three key areas: their chosen genre (including its historical evolution and modern theoretical perspectives), a specific historical era, and either rhetoric/literary theory or a personalized research focus. PhD candidates should demonstrate growing autonomy in both their creative work and critical analysis of literature and theory. Progress toward these goals enhances their ability to produce a compelling creative dissertation. Earning a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing provides strong preparation for careers in creative and scholarly publishing, as well as advanced teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
