The Master's Program in Tropical Medicine equips students with comprehensive knowledge in infectious disease microbiology and immunology, along with hands-on research experience in Tropical Medicine. Graduates holding this degree pursue diverse career paths, including science education at secondary and collegiate levels, research and technical roles in academic institutions, government organizations, and biotech firms, or further their studies through PhD and MD programs at the University of Hawaii and other universities.
To earn the MS degree, students must complete 21 credits of coursework, 9 credits of thesis research, engage in a research project, submit a final thesis, and pass an oral examination. Advancement to candidacy for the MS (Plan A) degree requires passing a comprehensive qualifying exam, both oral and written. In exceptional cases, a non-thesis MS (Plan B) option may be permitted, though it is not typically recommended. On average, students complete the MS degree within two years.
