The Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) Master's and PhD programs emphasize mastering advanced techniques and analytical skills through dedicated research, complemented by tailored elective courses across diverse subject areas. These degree programs are structured around three foundational disciplines that promote interdisciplinary research, mirroring the Earth Sciences department and SOEST's collaborative approach (geophysics/tectonics, marine/environmental geology, and volcanology/geochemistry/petrology). Planetary science, remote sensing, and mineral physics specializations are also available through DES or HIGP faculty advisement. Students benefit from extensive field locations and cutting-edge laboratory, computational, and marine research resources. Advanced coursework and seminars allow specialization within Earth Sciences subfields, while field, lab, or computational expertise is refined during the capstone experience—which may involve partnerships with local organizations. This culminating project is collaboratively designed by students and advisors.
Applicants typically hold undergraduate degrees in natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering, with at least one year each of college-level math, geology, physics, and chemistry. Required preparatory coursework varies by specialization, and applicants must declare their intended focus during admissions. Some students may need supplementary coursework upon program entry to address knowledge gaps in their academic background.
