UHM's Directing program equips students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to create not just staged productions, but entire unforgettable worlds. Directors must master essential elements like depth, rhythm, emotional resonance, intellectual rigor, profound empathy, and a human-centered artistic approach. Successful directing careers, whether in academia or professional settings, rely heavily on collaborative skills. While maintaining a clear artistic vision, directors must also allow space for creative contributions from actors, designers, and viewers. The program emphasizes intensive study of historical contexts, dramaturgical analysis, and cultural anthropology to develop each student's distinctive directorial voice. Students benefit from exposure to diverse theatrical traditions including Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Asian, and Western approaches. Ultimately, we aspire to cultivate visionary leaders and community advocates, recognizing that artistic innovation and social consciousness are deeply interconnected.
