The University of Hawaii at Mnoa's Theatre and Performance Studies programs are celebrated for their productions and curriculum that highlight both traditional and modern Hawaiian and Asian performance arts. Students across all levels and programs can explore acting, directing, design, playwriting, and theatre for young audiences (TYA), while history, theory, research, and performance studies courses offer essential context and inspire innovation. Learning is complemented by performances held in the 600-seat Kennedy Theatre and the more intimate Earle Ernst Lab Theatre.
The Theatre and Performance Studies department boasts 14 full-time faculty members who instruct over 40 courses each semester. With around 50 undergraduate majors, 38 master's candidates, and 15 PhD students, the program attracts aspiring theatre professionals from across the world to UHM.
Through academic coursework and a full season of performances in the stunning Kennedy Theatre complex, the program strives to introduce students and audiences to diverse works from its core focus areas. Degrees in Theatre and Performance Studies offer students both a comprehensive educational background and the chance to specialize in particular fields of interest.
