The musicology program recognizes its distinctive role within the diverse cultural landscape of the Pacific and adopts an expansive, internationally-minded view of the discipline. The Master of Arts in Music with a musicology specialization offers an up-to-date, thorough curriculum that honors the field's historical roots while exploring contemporary developments. This 30-credit program mandates at least twelve credits from 600-level courses (excluding 699 directed work and 700 thesis), with ensemble participation limited to four applicable credits. Prospective students should note that completing this master's program at the University of Hawaii typically requires a minimum of two years.
Our musicology faculty dedicate themselves to introducing students to diverse historical musicology methodologies. Their specialized knowledge spans from European medieval music theory to American film scoring, providing students with multifaceted analytical frameworks.
