Graduate Certificate Program in International Cultural Studies
Culture remains one of society's most complex and misunderstood concepts. Frequently, it's mistakenly viewed as existing beyond power structures - an intangible presence like the atmosphere around us. Cultural Studies challenges these notions by demonstrating that culture isn't static, uniform, or naturally occurring, but rather constantly evolves through human engagement. In essence: culture emerges from social processes and inherently carries political dimensions.
Cultural Studies further argues that culture doesn't belong to isolated or segregated groups. It cannot be simplistically attributed to physical characteristics or geographic locations. Rather, we all actively shape the cultural environments we share, though our influence varies significantly based on power dynamics. Many participate in cultures that don't fully recognize their belonging. Therefore, Cultural Studies approaches culture both as a socially constructed system and as an instrument of political and social regulation.
Simultaneously, Cultural Studies identifies culture as a vital space for political critique and transformation. Culture is dynamic, perpetually changing. Ultimately, Cultural Studies examines how meanings in our daily lives - including our self-perception within social practices - originate, spread, and are challenged through interconnected systems of power across social, political, and economic spheres.
