Biological Oceanography faculty and researchers conduct studies in varied environments and ecosystems worldwide. Their work extends from inland and coastal regions to the open ocean, exploring everything from surface waters to deep-sea trenches while pushing scientific boundaries to unravel the ocean's most profound questions.
As educators and research advisors, our faculty contribute to graduate programs in Oceanography and Marine Biology, as well as the undergraduate Global Environmental Science curriculum. Through our extensive funded initiatives, we offer engaging research experiences for students passionate about marine biology and biological oceanography.
Recognizing science's vital role in environmental conservation, our programs balance fundamental research with practical applications addressing societal challenges. We focus on pressing issues including greenhouse gas dynamics, ecological consequences of ozone depletion and seabed mining, pollutant movement processes, fishery sustainability, coastal ecosystem health, and microbial pathogen behavior. These interdisciplinary challenges promote active collaboration among biologists, geochemists, and physicists within our department and across academic institutions.
