The NREM PhD is granted exclusively to candidates demonstrating exceptional academic excellence. Those applying to the PhD program whose previous coursework doesn't align with NREM MS core prerequisites will need to fulfill these requirements during their doctoral studies. To maintain the program's interdisciplinary focus, all students must complete a foundational set of graduate-level courses (Primary PhD Core), irrespective of their chosen specialization. Supplementary elective courses are also mandatory, designed to strengthen research methodology expertise and deepen knowledge in the student's focus area. The balance of degree requirements is fulfilled through dissertation research (NREM 800). Before achieving candidacy status, every PhD candidate must successfully complete both written and oral Comprehensive Examinations (detailed below), which are developed and overseen by the student's dissertation committee.
