The Doctor of Philosophy in Music provides specialization options across four disciplines: composition, ethnomusicology, music education, and musicology. Candidates collaborate with faculty mentors to tailor their academic path, addressing any foundational gaps while preparing for comprehensive examinations and dissertation work.

Unlike traditional course-based programs, this PhD emphasizes examination performance, with credit requirements varying by specialization and individual background. Students complete concentration-specific courses alongside those recommended by their advisory committee, potentially including advanced writing seminars. All doctoral candidates must fulfill institutional residency mandates. (refer to Program Residency Requirements section)

A minimum of half the coursework must be graduate-level classes (numbered 600 or above).

Applicants without prior graduate-level bibliography/library research coursework must complete Mus 661 to satisfy this prerequisite at UHM.
