The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa is a vibrant research hub dedicated to advancing high-tech innovation in Hawaii's stunning island setting. The department has a distinguished history, having pioneered the groundbreaking ALOHA network – the world's first wireless packet network – during the 1970s.
Today, the department's cutting-edge research spans five key areas: 1) biomedical engineering, 2) computer engineering, 3) electrophysics, 4) power & energy systems, and 5) systems & data science
Our distinguished faculty includes six IEEE Fellows and four recipients of NSF Career/Presidential Young Investigator awards. Many professors have successfully translated their research into commercial ventures through startup companies. Department faculty have earned multiple best paper honors in prestigious journals and conferences, with one receiving the University of Hawaii's Regent's Medal for Excellence in Research and three honored with the Regent's Medal for Excellence in Teaching.
The department provides both M.S. and Ph.D. programs with financial support options for eligible students. Major funded initiatives include the NSF Center for Science of Information ($25M), NSF EPSCoR Ike Wai ($20M), and NSF CyberCorps Scholarship for Service ($5M).
University resources available to students and researchers include a high-performance computing facility, the Hawaii Advanced Wireless Technologies Institute (HAWTI), globally recognized earth and ocean science programs, an active Cancer Center, and of course, Hawaii's legendary beaches and breathtaking sunsets.
