The Department provides a graduate program culminating in a Ph.D. in civil engineering, with specializations available in construction management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and transportation. Below are the Admission Guidelines. Oversight of the Ph.D. program falls under the Department Graduate Program Chair.
The student learning outcomes (SLOs) for the doctoral program outline the competencies students should attain by graduation. Specifically, our Ph.D. graduates will possess the ability to:
Exhibit core civil engineering knowledge and advanced technical proficiency in their chosen specialization.
Analyze and synthesize literature to develop engineering solutions.
Deliver clear oral presentations of research plans and findings in formal settings.
Conduct independent engineering research, and,
Generate manuscripts suitable for publication.
Each specialization defines a course sequence to meet SLOs 1 and 2. For SLO 3, students must enroll in a seminar course featuring an oral presentation and complete a dissertation defended orally during their final examination. To fulfill SLOs 4 and 5, students must successfully execute a research-based dissertation. Writing support for graduate students is available to assist in achieving SLOs 4 and 5.
