The Department provides a graduate program culminating in a Ph.D. in civil engineering, with specialization options including construction management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and transportation. The PhD program's student learning outcomes (SLOs) outline the competencies students should attain by graduation. Our PhD graduates will possess the ability to:
Exhibit core civil engineering knowledge and advanced technical skills within their chosen specialization.
Analyze and integrate scholarly literature to develop engineering solutions.
Deliver polished oral presentations of research proposals and findings in formal environments.
Conduct innovative engineering research, and,
Generate manuscripts suitable for publication.
Each specialization designs a course sequence to meet SLOs 1 and 2. For SLO 3, students must enroll in a seminar course featuring an oral presentation and complete a dissertation with an oral defense. To fulfill SLOs 4 and 5, students must successfully produce a research-based dissertation. Writing support is available to assist students in achieving SLOs 4 and 5.
