The Music Department provides two piano performance degree options: a Bachelor of Music (BM) and Master of Music (MM) in Piano Performance.
Our BM and MM programs in Piano Performance deliver rigorous training for aspiring concert pianists, chamber musicians, and accompanists, while preparing graduates for teaching positions in higher education and private studios. Both programs culminate in a full-length memorized public recital.
The Bachelor of Arts program offers a more flexible liberal arts approach that students can tailor to their specific goals. This degree concludes with a shorter memorized public recital.
Our distinguished Piano Faculty includes Dr. Jonathan Korth, Dr. Thomas Yee, Bichuan Li, Rosy Wang, and Wendy Yamashita. We are committed to helping students reach their highest artistic and professional potential.
UHM provides abundant performance opportunities. Weekly Piano Studio Classes allow majors to perform in Orvis Auditorium, receiving supportive feedback. The department also hosts public Piano Repertory Labs four times each semester. Students can compete in our annual Concerto Competition for a chance to perform with the UH Symphony Orchestra. Numerous ensembles are available, including Chamber Music, Piano Vocal Collaboration, Contemporary Music Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. The department is particularly renowned for its diverse ethnic ensembles.
Students enjoy access to our newly upgraded practice facilities, featuring climate-controlled rooms with high-quality Steinway and Petrov instruments.
Piano students can immerse themselves in Honolulu's active musical community through organizations like the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and Honolulu Chamber Music Series. We encourage participation in professional associations including HPTA, MTNA, and HMTA, which host events like the annual state convention and biennial Pianomania festival.
Beyond piano specialization, our department offers comprehensive training in music theory, composition, education, and various other musical disciplines.
