The Music Education program at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa offers a thorough curriculum focused on preparing skilled educators for public schools. Students pursuing undergraduate studies can earn a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with specialization options in choral/general music or instrumental music (band or orchestra). The State of Hawaii Teaching Certificate obtained through this program has reciprocity in more than 30 states. Additionally, a music education minor is offered for students focusing on other related disciplines.
Aspiring music teachers typically start their journey in the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program. After completing roughly one-third to half of the required courses (approximately two years), they can apply to the College of Education. The admission process includes transcript review, testing, and interviews. Once accepted, students complete remaining coursework, culminating in a professional semester of student teaching and certification.
