History explores humanity's past to understand how our present world came to be. Through this examination, we develop crucial analytical abilities.
Historians investigate intricate historical transformations and patterns. We cultivate the ability to navigate uncertainty and reconcile opposing perspectives. We critically examine original documents and primary sources within their historical frameworks, producing well-researched papers that integrate extensive information. A History degree consequently provides exceptional preparation for various professions demanding critical thinking and strong communication skills, including education, media, legal practice, public service, information management, corporate sectors, and more.
Beyond these valuable competencies, the History program establishes these specific educational objectives:
Students can articulate patterns of historical development and persistence.
Students can compose coherent analytical writing and deliver structured oral presentations following academic standards.
Students can locate, analyze, and assess primary materials and relevant historical data.
Students can recognize key scholarly debates within their chosen historical specialization.
We strongly recommend History majors explore the Honors program, and urge Honors students to consider History as their field of study.
The History Honors Track provides flexible pathways to complete both requirements efficiently, requiring just 3 extra credits beyond the standard 33-credit major.
