Hartt's music history program allows you to study diverse musical traditions from around the world within their historical and cultural frameworks. Through introductory surveys and specialized seminars, majors and minors develop a thorough appreciation of music as both an art form and cultural expression. Hartt provides undergraduate and graduate degree options, including a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and minor in music history, with details about each program outlined below. A key aspect of Hartt's approach is its adaptable elective courses tailored to student preferences. These thoughtfully designed electives have covered topics like operatic history, chamber music repertoire, interactive media scores, musical psychology, South Asian traditions, and textual criticism. The curriculum also incorporates jazz studies through Hartt's Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz.
Beyond academic studies, you'll engage with performing ensembles such as the Collegium Musicum Baroque group. Hartt maintains an extensive collection of period instruments - from Renaissance lutes and recorders to harpsichords and early brass - creating a dynamic, hands-on learning experience. Undergraduate music history majors select between two tracks: the scholarly research concentration focuses on analytical writing and academic methodologies, while the performance practice track blends musical performance with historical performance techniques, ornamentation studies, and related disciplines. At the graduate level, students may specialize in research, performance practice, or combine music history with pedagogical training through our music history pedagogy emphasis, which integrates historical studies with contemporary teaching methodologies from Hartt's music education program.
