Hartt's Music Conducting program offers a distinctive chance to develop conducting skills across multiple genres, from vocal and opera to musical theater and instrumental conducting. Graduate students at Hartt can engage in advanced studies through specialized programs tailored for those aspiring to professional conducting careers, whether in academia or performance. Beyond focusing on your primary discipline—be it orchestra, wind band, or choir—you'll also collaborate with other ensembles. This comprehensive approach ensures emerging conductors receive diverse training to meet the demands of the field. The Instrumental Conducting program at The Hartt School is particularly exceptional, equipping students for the wide-ranging opportunities in the conducting profession. You'll learn from seasoned faculty members Glen Adsit (Director of Bands) and Edward Cumming (Director of Orchestral Activities), whose combined six decades of global performance and teaching expertise enrich the program. Alongside weekly private lessons, score analysis, and seminars, students can explore additional studies with vocal faculty.
Typically, the program includes two master's and two doctoral students, all of whom gain hands-on experience rehearsing and performing with ensembles such as the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Contemporary Ensemble, and optionally, Music Theatre and Opera.
