Hartt's Music Conducting program offers a distinctive chance to develop conducting skills across diverse musical styles, from vocal and opera to music theater and all forms of instrumental conducting. Graduate students at Hartt can engage in specialized advanced studies through our one-of-a-kind conducting programs, tailored for those showing promise for professional conducting careers—whether in academic settings or professional appointments. Beyond focused training in your primary area (orchestra, wind band, or choir), you'll also conduct and collaborate across different musical disciplines. Hartt's conducting program stands out by preparing emerging conductors through comprehensive, varied experiences.
Typically, the program includes two master's and two doctoral students, each gaining hands-on rehearsal and performance opportunities with ensembles like the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Contemporary Ensemble, and optionally, Music Theatre and Opera, based on individual interests.
