The Doctor of Musical Arts program cultivates well-rounded musicians by blending exceptional artistry with academic rigor. This advanced curriculum equips students for elite careers in performance, education, or creative work in music.

Typically requiring at least two years beyond a master's degree, the D.M.A. mandates a full-time first year with at least 9 credits per semester. Students may begin with one summer term before their residency. All program requirements must be fulfilled within seven years of enrollment.

Hartt's vocal program emphasizes technical and artistic development under expert mentorship. Our comprehensive undergraduate and graduate offerings feature private instruction, vocal coaching, pedagogy courses, language/diction training, opera performance techniques, and a dynamic core music education.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for this degree will have completed a bachelor’s degree in music education at an accredited institution and will have obtained their teacher certification.

International applicants are preferred to be proficient in English — or have TOEFL, PTE or IELTS if you are not a native speaker of the English Language. Average TOEFL scores for students range from a minimum of 80 (Internet Based Total), and 550 (Paper Based Total). The minimum score for the PTE is a 58. IELTS minimum score for graduate studies is 6.5.
