This program equips students for advanced academic pursuits, teaching roles, or research-oriented careers. The Music Theory curriculum at The Hartt School provides comprehensive preparation for postgraduate education, instructional positions, or scholarly work. Students explore tonal harmony, analytical techniques, contemporary methods, counterpoint studies (both tonal and modal), keyboard harmony, score interpretation, orchestration, and pedagogical approaches to music theory. With faculty members from diverse backgrounds, theory students examine music through various lenses, developing an understanding of different viewpoints while cultivating their own scholarly framework. The structured music theory program, guided by department faculty, covers essential subjects including harmonic analysis, modern compositional techniques, contrapuntal studies, keyboard applications, score reading, instrumentation, and teaching methodologies. During their final year, students complete a thesis project on a self-selected topic under faculty supervision. The music theory major can be taken independently or combined with another discipline as a minor.
