Hartt's music history program allows students to examine Western music within its historical and cultural frameworks. Ranging from introductory surveys to specialized seminars, majors and minors develop a thorough knowledge of all eras of Western music. A key aspect of our program is the adaptable elective options tailored to individual interests, with many courses created specifically for our current student body. Recent offerings have covered topics like opera history, string quartet repertoire, C.P.E. Bach, pre-tonal theory, medieval influences in contemporary media, cognitive psychology, and textual criticism, while also providing opportunities to study jazz and African-American musical traditions through the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division. Music history majors can select either a scholarship/research track or performance practices concentration. The scholarship track involves methodical examination of musical elements through academic writing, while the performance practice option merges musical performance with historical studies of technique, ornamentation, and related performance considerations.
