Hartt's music history program allows you to study Western music within its historical and cultural frameworks. From introductory overviews to specialized seminars, majors and minors develop a thorough knowledge of all eras of Western music. A key aspect of our program is the adaptable elective courses tailored to student interests, with offerings frequently shaped by current enrollment. Recent course selections have covered opera history, string quartet repertoire, C.P.E. Bach, pre-tonal theory, medieval influences in contemporary media, cognitive psychology, and textual criticism, while jazz and African-American music traditions are available through the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division. Beyond academic studies, you'll engage with performance groups like our Baroque ensemble, the Collegium Musicum. Hartt's extensive assortment of period instruments - including recorders, Renaissance lutes and flutes, harpsichords, clavichords, baroque bows, shawms, and sackbuts - creates a dynamic, hands-on learning experience.
