The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Special Education provides initial certification for individuals with bachelor's degrees in unrelated fields who lack teaching credentials. Candidates must acquire both foundational and advanced competencies before certification. The curriculum combines required coursework with practical field experiences. Additionally, all graduate students in special education conduct applied research as part of their degree requirements. This program specializes in educating students with moderate to severe autism spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities. The training equips educators to implement modified curricula tailored to students who require alternatives to standard academic programs. These customized learning plans may encompass practical academic skills, essential life competencies, career preparation, recreational activities, and community participation. The program focuses on developing expertise in behavior intervention techniques, specialized teaching methods, assistive technologies, and transition planning. Primary candidates for these adapted curricula typically have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities or significant autism spectrum needs.

The 36-credit minimum program consists of core courses and personalized applied research aligned with each student's professional goals. This structure enables participants to develop specialized expertise across various special education domains and age groups.
