The Department of Romance Languages provides graduate studies in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, awarding Master of Arts degrees in Spanish or Romance Languages, along with a Doctoral degree in Romance Languages. MA candidates can opt for either a thesis or non-thesis track, focusing on literature or linguistics, and may specialize in one language or multiple languages. Faculty in the Department of Romance Languages instruct in the languages, literatures, and cultures of French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish-speaking regions. MA candidates in Romance Languages can specialize in French, Italian (paired with another language), Portuguese, Spanish, Romance Linguistics, or a combination of languages, selecting either a thesis or non-thesis option. Students receive guidance from the graduate coordinator in their first year and a faculty advisor in their second year. Most students complete their degrees while holding teaching assistantships, which include full tuition waivers and stipends. Out-of-state tuition waivers are also available for non-assistantship students. The MA in Romance Languages with a thesis requires 33 credit hours: 9 courses, 6 thesis credits, MA exams, an oral defense, and proficiency in another Romance language.
