Linguistics is the scientific study of language's intricate systems. This field encompasses phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics, examining both modern and ancient languages from synchronic and diachronic perspectives. The M.A. program aims to equip students with foundational knowledge in key linguistic research areas, an overview of the discipline's diverse subfields, and specialized expertise in two chosen focus areas. This prepares graduates either for advanced Ph.D. studies in Linguistics (at UGA or other institutions) or for careers requiring a master's degree in Linguistics. The program offers both thesis and non-thesis completion options.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant's degree(s) need not be in Linguistics, but coursework or experience relevant to Linguistics is strongly preferred.

Applicants with a bachelor's or master's degree unrelated to linguistics may apply for either an MA or Ph.D., but admission to the Ph.D. program for such applicants demands exemplary qualifications.

Successful applicants for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs typically have undergraduate GPAs well above 3.0.

While there is no official minimum score required for admission, international applicants who wish to be funded by the department must possess a speaking score of 26 (TOEFL) or 7.5 (IELTS).
