The Ph.D. program offers comprehensive training in linguistics while allowing students to focus on specific specializations, including formal linguistic theory, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics and language variation, and historical Indo-European linguistics. Students work with their advisory committees to design personalized study plans emphasizing two specialized fields within these broader categories. These academic plans may incorporate coursework or research from connected fields like computer science, philosophy, or the historical and structural analysis of particular languages.

Letters of recommendation
The University of Georgia will accept satisfactory scores on either the TOEFL or IELTS language proficiency examinations for admission to graduate programs. TOEFL scores can be submitted electronically by the testing agency. IELTS scores must be send by paper. Minimum TOEFL score requirement: overall score of 80 with at least 20 on speaking and writing. Minimum IELTS score requirement: overall band-width of 6.5, with no single band (score) below 6.0.
