Students pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) launch and lead pioneering research initiatives that, combined with supplementary studies, prepare them to become trailblazers in their field and excel in diverse career paths across industry, government, or academia. Ph.D. candidates are required to integrate and generate novel insights, deliver significant original contributions to their discipline, and exhibit comprehensive subject mastery. The Engineering Ph.D. program offers exceptional adaptability for both students and faculty to tackle contemporary engineering challenges. Through specialized Emphasis Areas, doctoral candidates can concentrate on either a specific technical field or cross-disciplinary domains.

Modern infrastructure systems form the backbone of industrialized societies, encompassing energy distribution, water management, transportation networks, communication systems, and public facilities. Resilience refers to the ability of systems, communities, and individuals to anticipate, adapt to, and recover from disruptions while prospering in evolving conditions. The Resilient Infrastructure Systems program develops groundbreaking approaches to help organizations and governments manage environmental shifts, extreme weather, and climate challenges by redesigning and upgrading infrastructure to enhance economic, ecological, and community durability. This program enables scholars to pursue comprehensive research on both constructed and natural infrastructure systems involving transportation, environmental resources, energy, and food production, along with their interdependencies. Participants can customize their academic journey by selecting from UGA's wide-ranging curriculum spanning engineering specialties, geosciences, urban planning, ecological studies, health sciences, legal frameworks, and social science disciplines.

Qualification Requirements

Completion of a B.S. and M.S. (for Ph.D. applicants) with minimum GPA of 3.00 (out of 4.00) from an ABET accredited program or program in a related field. The average undergraduate GPA and graduate GPA of recent accepted students is 3.4 and 3.6, respectively.

DIRECT PHD ADMISSION
Exceptional and highly motivated students with a B.S. degree who have not completed an M.S. degree may apply for direct admission to a Ph.D. program provided they have demonstrated research experience. The student's desire and suitability to enter a Ph.D. program should be clearly articulated in their statement of purpose and in accompanying letters of recommendation.
