The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology operates within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, primarily serving as a graduate department offering Master's and Ph.D. programs. The Davison Life Sciences Building, a $36 million facility constructed in 1991, contains 20 spacious research laboratories dedicated to biochemistry and molecular biology. This building features a fermentation plant for large-scale microorganism production, animal housing, and extensive plant growth chambers, providing comprehensive research capabilities for diverse organisms. Additionally, some faculty maintain laboratories in the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, a $10 million research facility staffed by six faculty members and 100 support personnel.
