The Department of Anthropology provides a doctoral program culminating in a Ph.D. in anthropology. These advanced studies emphasize foundational anthropological training while concentrating on environmental and ecological anthropology.
The curriculum centers on anthropology's unique capacity to examine human-environment relationships across time and cultures. Doctoral candidates gain opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary studies in fields related to sustainable human ecosystems. Complementary coursework is available through the Institute of Ecology, Environmental Ethics Program, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and related Arts and Sciences departments. Program graduates will be prepared for academic, research, or professional positions. The Ph.D. requirements include successful completion of comprehensive exams (written and oral), research skills demonstration, language proficiency, and an approved dissertation aligned with both the student's specialization and departmental emphasis.
