Oceans span over half of our planet's surface and serve vital functions for both land and aquatic ecosystems. Thriving marine habitats are essential for protecting threatened species like whales, sea turtles, and manatees, yet these environments confront dangers from various human actions, including pollution runoff from urban and agricultural areas into ocean waters. At the Odum School of Ecology, researchers explore diverse topics from sea turtle preservation to coral reef organism biology and the consequences of invasive species on ocean life. Student research projects examine human influences on marine environments, including climate change's effect on coral reef biodiversity and how non-native species transform coastal ecosystems.
