The Bachelor of Music in Composition offers three years of hands-on training with a primary instrument (first through third years), complemented by three years of focused composition instruction (second through fourth years). Throughout this period, participants (based on their program standing) must attend or are strongly advised to join weekly workshops analyzing and critiquing student works. The curriculum builds comprehensive knowledge in music theory and history while incorporating practice on a secondary instrument, with particular attention given to modern repertoire performance. The program concludes in the fourth year with a composition recital featuring an extended work or multi-movement piece for an ensemble of three or more musicians. Additionally, composition majors must perform recitals showcasing their vocal or instrumental specialization.
