The German program at UGA equips students with strong communication skills and cultural understanding in German language and society.
Beyond fundamental language classes, learners work closely with faculty advisors to create personalized study plans aligned with their professional aspirations and academic passions. The department features experts across German Studies disciplines, blending language instruction with literature, linguistics, cinema, history, philosophy, cultural analysis, and modern German business and political landscapes. Students develop analytical skills for independent research in German studies, learn to examine cultural distinctions, and are strongly advised to participate in international study programs.
Numerous students combine German studies with another discipline or continue their education after completing their degree. Career opportunities span government sectors, academic institutions, and corporate environments (including both American firms operating in German markets and German-speaking companies with U.S. branches). German language skills are particularly valuable in technology-driven industries like automotive manufacturing, optical engineering, and medical device development.
