Geology explores Earth's solid materials, the rocks that form its structure, and the natural processes that transform them. The Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) in Geology at UGA offers a more adaptable academic path compared to the B.S. degree, ideal for students pursuing broader liberal arts education or combining it with other disciplines. While this program doesn't specifically ready students for professional or graduate studies, it provides foundational knowledge.
The program emphasizes laboratory sessions and practical learning. Fieldwork is integral to core courses, bridging classroom theory with real-world examination. Participants might investigate coastal dynamics on Georgia's barrier islands, study unique mineral formations at Grave's Mountain in the Inner Piedmont, analyze fault systems in the Blue Ridge Mountains, or explore ancient fossil deposits in the Valley and Ridge and Cumberland Plateau regions.
Summer offerings feature a six-week field school in Canon City, Colorado (mandatory for the A.B. degree). Activities range from terrain mapping in the Rocky Mountains' Front Range to assessing water pollution in the Colorado Plateau, along with excursions to Utah and New Mexico. Students develop expertise in traditional and digital mapping techniques, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and geochemical evaluation methods.
