Arabic serves as both an Asian and African language with multiple dialectal variations. It holds official status in 27 countries and boasts more than 290 million speakers worldwide. Modern Standard Arabic represents the formal, written version of the language employed in official contexts and most formal communication.
The University of Georgia introduced its Arabic major program in spring 2009. The curriculum includes core classes in Advanced Standard Arabic, Islamic Arabic, Advanced Conversation & Composition, and Arabic Media, along with electives covering topics like Quranic studies, contemporary Islam, Middle Eastern history and religion, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and U.S. foreign policy.
Modern Standard Arabic studies particularly benefit Social Sciences students pursuing careers or academic work in Arab nations (including North Africa), Humanities scholars in fields like History, Art, Music, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Religion, as well as Applied Sciences and Business students who may engage in professional or research activities in Arabic-speaking regions.
