Explore music as a medium for communication and artistic expression, examining its intellectual, historical, and cultural significance within the societies that produced it.
At the University of Florida's Musicology program, we combine historical, cultural, theoretical, and interdisciplinary methods to analyze music through diverse lenses. Our program fosters a collaborative atmosphere for research, education, and creative projects among students and faculty, leveraging UF's exceptional interdisciplinary resources in African, Latin American, European, and Gender Studies, as well as the Digital Worlds Institute. Through courses and seminars in history, historical musicology, and ethnomusicology, students receive comprehensive theoretical and hands-on training.
Graduate students engage in close mentorship with faculty in both research and teaching. Faculty members also participate actively in musical performances, offering unique chances to blend performance, academic study, and community engagement through our initiatives. The Musicology program collaborates with UF's Center for World Arts and World Music Ensembles, enabling students to interact directly with international artists-in-residence through rehearsals, private lessons, performances, and community outreach programs.
