The Media Literacy Education specialization enables graduate students to explore how popular media and digital content can enhance literacy development. Those pursuing a Curriculum and Instruction degree can incorporate a 12-hour Media Literacy focus. Additionally, learners may choose to complete either a Master's of Art in Education or a Ph.D. concentrating on Media Literacy Education.
While media plays a crucial role in American society, school curricula seldom encourage students to critically analyze media content or examine its cultural impact. This landscape is evolving, however, as all 50 states have incorporated media literacy competencies into their educational standards. Major educational associations, including the National Council of Teachers of English, National Council of Teachers of Science, International Reading Association, and National Council for the Social Studies, have established professional standards and research initiatives promoting media literacy across elementary education and academic disciplines.
This shift presents challenges for educators, as the increasing importance of media in literature, science, politics, health, and technology fields creates new demands. Many teachers lack sufficient training in media concepts or effective instructional strategies for analyzing media content.
The Media Literacy Education specialization offers graduate students the chance to examine how contemporary media and online materials can foster literacy skills. Curriculum and Instruction students can supplement their degree with a 12-hour Media Literacy concentration. Alternatively, candidates may pursue either a Master's of Art in Education or a Ph.D. with a specialization in Media Literacy Education.
