Catastrophic natural disasters, whether sudden or gradual, along with violent conflicts, impact countless individuals globally, frequently harming vulnerable ecosystems and protected regions. These emergencies carry profound political, financial, and societal consequences that may undo progress, deepen poverty and disparity, and heighten the likelihood of future crises.
The Geography Department provides both Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Science (MS) degrees, as well as a Doctoral (PhD) program. These involve coursework and the creation of a research thesis or dissertation. Graduate candidates collaborate with their faculty advisors to refine their academic pursuits within one of our specialized Focus Areas.

Our graduate research spans diverse, interdisciplinary topics worldwide, including climate and land cover shifts, deforestation and territorial disputes, extreme weather phenomena, river rehabilitation, healthcare access, and emerging infectious diseases.
